Sinn Féin’s Historic Win in Northern Ireland Election

For the first time, left-wing Sinn Féin became the largest party in the Northern Irish Assembly. A “historic breakthrough”, says Heinz Bierbaum, President of the Party of the European Left (EL).

The Party of the European Left congratulates on the historical win. Heinz Bierbaum comments:

Sinn Féin led a great campaign focusing on investment in the welfare state, health care, affordable housing, and taxation of the rich. Sinn Féin’s win also means growing support for Irish unity which marks a historic shift. Therefore the prospect of Sinn Féin taking the lead in both parts of the island of Ireland has alarmed London. It increases the likelihood of a border poll, which Sinn Féin is aiming for. Such a referendum on the unification of Northern Ireland and Ireland can be called if a majority appears to be in favour."
