Urszula Nowakowska
Urszula Nowakowska, lawyer and feminist, social activist by avocation and passion – founder of the Centrum Praw Kobiet Foundation. She was dismissed from her first job at the Instytut Problematyki Przestępczości because of her involvement in opposition activities. Since the mid-1980s she has been involved in the independence, freedom, peace and feminist movement emerging in Poland. Co-founder of the Polskiego Stowarzyszenia Feministycznego (1989). In the first half of the 1990s, she took part in internships in the USA at the in the US Congress, the Women’s Global Leadership Institute and the Centre for Reproductive Law and Policy. After returning to Poland in 1994, she established the Centrum Praw Kobiet Foundation. She was also a co-founder of the Women Against Violence Europe (WAVE). In the 1990s she worked in the Polish Sejm, in the Commission for European Integration and the Constitutional Commission, thanks to which several important women-friendly laws were enacted as national legislation.
